Salim Macki, Chairman of OOSC Group of Companies holds a Master’s Degree in Petrochemical Engineering from Moscow. He became the first Omani Petroleum Engineer in PDO and later served as Director General of Oil and Minerals. Macki was an Ambassador with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Sultanate of Oman. He spent most of his working life in the oil and gas industry, where he is highly regarded internationally. He holds, or has previously held, many senior executive positions in various private and state owned entities in Oman and internationally, among them as a board member of Oman Oil Company, chairman of Oman India Fertilizer Company (OMIFCO) and board member of the Caspian Oil Pipeline (CPC). It was after Macki left the Ministry of Oil and Gas, that he started his own business in the oil related sector in 1974 - Oman Oilfields Supply Center LLC (OOSC).
Today, the OOSC Group of Companies has over 10,000 employees and Macki believes that one of the main reasons behind his success, besides education and opportunities, is the fact that he stayed in the business he knew best. STS was established in 1980 as a member of the OOSC group of companies, to provide specialist oil & gas field maintenance services. The STS Group is a leading multidisciplinary contracting group specialising in construction, manufacturing and maintenance services for the energy and industrial sectors, and has operations through the Gulf and Australia.
Basil Macki had his early formative years of schooling in the UK. Later, he earned himself a scholarship from Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to obtain a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London.
Graduating from Imperial College in 1996, a young Basil came back to work in PDO as a Mechanical Construction Supervisor where he was positioned in Marmul for over 18 months. This was the beginning of a long association with PDO which he considers his alma mater. It was this experience that influenced Basil to adopt a hands on participative style of management later.
The quest for knowledge and previous experiences drove him to take on an assignment as Process Engineer with Shell Holland in 1998. During this time, he completed his Master's degree in Business Administration from the reputed Dutch Business School, Nyenrode University.
Oman beckoned, with Basil joining the family business OOSC as Head of Oilfield Marketing. After four years of successfully managing this portfolio, in 2004 he was appointed Managing Director of OOSC Group in addition to Managing Director of STS. During this period, STS has grown exponentially under his leadership from an employee base of 500 to a strength of over 10,000 permanent employees when in late 2013 when he handed over the reigns of STS to Alex Clark as Chief Executive Officer.
